“My doctor says that the colon cleanses itself and I don’t need a colon cleanse. Is that accurate?”
Yes it’s true that the colon is designed to clean itself out. If it didn’t we’d be in trouble. However, it only works well when we eat plenty of dietary fiber. The recommended daily intake of fiber is 27g. But most of us only eat 11g. The result is the colon becomes sluggish. Interestingly in cultures with high fiber intake, diseases of the digestive system are very rare. So, if you are one of those lucky people who has had a healthy high fiber diet your whole life, you may not need a cleanse. On the other hand, if you’re like most of us, you could gain a lot from completing a good herbal cleanse.
“I’ve seen photos of this gunk on colon cleanse sites that is supposed to have come out of people’s bodies. Is that stuff for real?”
It’s called “mucoid plaque” and it is for real. Some people say that it is created by the herbs in herbal colon cleanses. I’ve seen and smelled the stuff and I can tell you that it absolutely is not made of herbs. In my experience, it’s a dark, dense, rubber-like substance. Doctors say that it develops in an acidic digestive system and hardens over time. The only tested way to eliminate this plaque, by the way, is through using herbal cleansing.
“Is colon cleansing dangerous?”
Overall colon cleansing is a very safe process. Like any health practice, though, there are some precautions to take. First, if you are considering having a colon hydrotherapy treatment, you need to make sure that your therapist is certified, uses filtered water and sterile instruments. Second, if you decide on an herbal colon cleanse, be careful of any that contain the herb “senna.” Senna can cause digestive cramping and diarrhea in some people. There are other herbs such as “cascara sagrada” and “wormwood” that have a similar effect and do so more safely.
“Can colon cleansing help me lose weight and improve my skin by next week?”
There is a lot of hype in the colon cleansing world that claims the process is a quick fix cure-all. The truth is that colon cleansing can improve your overall health in a relatively short time. However, it requires consistency and persistence, especially when it comes to diet. In my experience the people who have the most success with cleansing take a long term approach. They eat a healthy diet with lots of fiber regularly and then twice a year or so they complete a thorough high quality herbal cleanse. Following this easy going approach will keep you healthier throughout your life.
