Intestinal Cleansing 101

by The Ultimate Cleanse Team on February 28, 2011

Over the past several years, detox and cleansing programs have become increasingly popular.   More and more people are claiming the powerful benefits of this natural approach to restoring health.    One of the most commonly referred to types of detox is intestinal cleansing.   But exactly what is it and how does it work

What Is Intestinal Cleansing?

When it comes to our intestines, it’s important to understand that we have 2, the small and the large. The small intestine is the longer of the two, measuring about 6 meters (19 feet) in length.    It is the place where the majority of chemical digestion takes place and where most nutrients from the foods we eat are absorbed.     The large intestine, more commonly referred to as the “colon” is 1.5 meters (4.5 feet) long and completes the work of digestion and elimination.  The colon extracts water and electrolytes from the chyme (digested liquid) flowing through it and then compacts the remains for elimination.

Over time and as a consequence of poor diet, both the large and small intestines can end up with a coating of mucus. This mucus forms in order to protect the tissues of the organs from toxins.  Unfortunately it can be difficult for the body to eliminate and can cause problems in the digestion of food and the absorption of nutrients.   If you’d like to see a picture of what plaque looks like once it’s out of the body you can click here.

Intestinal cleansing, done properly, then is a specific program that helps the body eliminate this mucoid plaque and restores both intestines to their maximum working capacity.

Who Needs Intestinal Cleansing?

Dr. John Harvey Kellog, founder of Kellog’s cereal company did 1000s of autopsies during his medical career.  He discovered that an overwhelming 90% of people had partially blocked intestines.    The main reason for this according to his research is a lack of dietary fiber in the average diet.   That’s one of the reasons  he founded his cereal company.  intestinal cleansing

The reality is that most of us have eaten a diet and lived a lifestyle that has led to the need for intestinal cleansing. The major dietary risk factors for developing muciod plaque include:

  • Eating a diet heavy in processed foods
  • Eating red meat more than a few times a week
  • Eating fried foods
  • Eating processed wheat products
  • Not getting enough fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Not drinking sufficient water

Most of us who have grown up in the west have eaten such a diet and could absolutely benefit from a thorough intestinal cleansing program.

What Kinds of Intestinal Cleansing Are There?

There are several kinds of cleanses available.   One of the most talked about is colon hydrotherapy.   This involves washing the large intestine with water.   There are several risks to this approach and since it only cleans the colon it is the least complete of the approaches.

Fasting either on water or juice is also used as an intestinal cleansing method.    The reality is that the body does work to cleanse itself during fasting programs.  However, fasting typically leaves mucoid plaque intact.   Fasting is also very radical and must be done with care.

The final and most complete way to cleanse both the small and large intestines is to use a high quality herbal detox program.   On this type of a program you follow a cleansing diet based largely on fresh fruit and vegetables, while at the same time taking several herbal formulas that help the body to release plaque from the intestines as well as to restore the proper functioning of the kidney and liver (major detox organs).

Is Intestinal Cleansing Safe?

Done properly, all types of intestine cleanses are considered to be safe.   But you must have proper instructions and programs with high quality ingredients in order to make sure that you stay safe during a detox.   If you have any questions you should really consult a doctor whom you trust.   One note:  intestinal cleansing is NOT recommended for pregnant and nursing women since it is possible for some of the toxins to enter her blood stream and to thereby affect the developing child.

Final Words on Intestinal Cleansing

The benefits of a complete cleanse program can be life changing.   We see it again and again every day.   Just keep in mind that detox is a process that requires some effort and discipline.   And make sure to use a respected and trusted program.
