What Does the Colon Do and How Does it Relate to Health?

by The Ultimate Cleanse Team on May 14, 2010

Our colon, or large intestine is a large muscular pipe that is about 1.5 meters (5 and a half feet) long and roughly 6.5 centimeters (2 1/2 inches around. The colon is divided up into six different parts which are: the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the cecum, the sigmoid, the descending colon and the rectum.

The colon has two main jobs. First it must receive the positive and life promoting B-vitamin complexes that are produced by healthy bacteria on its walls. In order to do this the walls of the colon must be free from debris. Second, the colon prepares the liquefied remains of our food called “chyme” for elimination. After the colon absorbs the excess water from the chyme it then pushes it out of the body, along with any dead bacteria, through the rectum.

As the major “sewage system” of the body, it’s hard to overestimate the importance of the colon to overall health. Simply put, when the colon is clean the whole body works much better.

Dr. Norman Walker, the inventor of vegetable juicing, wrote several books on colon health in his long career. In them he shows how the colon is linked to every other organ in the body. With his patients he observed that when there was a blockage in the colon a corresponding infirmity was usually found in one of the organs.

Walker’s conclusion is that an unhealthy colon affects the body in 2 distinct ways.

The first, and most extreme way, is a colon that has retained excrement in it. Surgeons like Dr. John Harvey Kellog have found up to 30 pounds of unreleased feces in some colons. The problem for the body is that when the colon retains waste instead of eliminating it, the extra weight and mass puts pressure on other organs which then fall out of their natural alignment and cease to function ideally. A heavy colon can affect nearly all other internal organs – including the heart and lungs.

The second way the colon can negatively affect health is called “autointoxication.” When the colon is sluggish or weak digestion and elimination are compromised and the body can poison itself. With a clogged colon, toxins remain inside of the body instead of being eliminated. Eventually, to protect itself, the body stores them in fat cells or in the mucus lining of the intestines

The good news in all of this is that keeping the colon clean is fairly easy to do as long as you eat a diet high in fiber and drink plenty of water. Since most of us don’t do either of these things, it’s more important than ever to complete a high quality herbal colon cleanse from time to time. I’ve been cleansing regularly for the past 10 years and haven’t been to the doctor once!

Here’s the program I recommend. It’s called the Ultimate Cleanse – and is a whole body detox and cleanse kit that you can complete in 10 days.
